The Republic of Korea Armed Forces (Korean: daehanmingug guggun; Hanja: Da Han Min Guo Guo Jun ; RR: Daehanminguk Gukgun; lit. The armed forces of South Korea are known as the Republic of Korea National Military, also known under the ROK Armed Forces. With a reported 3,750,000 personnel in 2020 (including 3,100,000.000 reserve and 650,000 active), the ROK Armed Forces ranks as one of the most powerful and largest standing armed forces worldwide. It is the sixth most powerful military force on the planet, with a reported personnel strength of 3,750,000 in 2020 (650,000 active and 3,100,000 reserve).



This reflects its size and its equipment. Founded in 1948 following the establishment of the Republic of Korea’s government in 1945. The South Korean military forces are responsible to maintain the sovereignty and territorial integrity and engage in peacekeeping operations and humanitarian and disaster relief efforts around the world.
