Informations

The Federal Republic of Somalia's military forces are known as the Somali Armed Forces. They are headed by the President as Commander-in-Chief and have the constitutional mandate to protect the nation's sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity. It grew to be one of the largest militaries in Africa during the period after independence. The military began to crumble in 1988 due to Barre's increased dependence on his clans, repressive policy and the Somali Rebellion.

The Red Berets had become a clan militia by the time President Siad Barre fled Mogadishu, January 1991. After 2000, there was a slow rebuilding process. The Federal Government of Somalia's Ministry of Defence, Ministry of National Security and Ministry of Interior and Federalism supervised the security sector in January 2014. Puntland, the northeastern region, has its own military force.
