Informations

The 2010-11 Ivorian Crisis was a political crisis that erupted in Ivory Coast after Laurent Gbagbo (the President of Ivory Coast from 2000) was declared the winner of the Ivorian election 2010. This was the first election in the country for 10 years. Alassane Ouattara was the opposition candidate. A number of countries, organizations, and leaders around the world claimed Ouattara had won. After months of negotiations and occasional violence, the crisis reached a critical stage when Ouattara's forces launched a military offensive.

They quickly took control of most parts of the country and attacked key targets in Abidjan. International organizations had reported many human rights violations at the time. The UN took military action to defend civilians and itself. Gbagbo was captured and arrested in Abidjan on April 11, 2011, by pro-Ouattara troops backed by French forces. This markedly helped to end the crisis.
