Informations

The combined military forces of Bangladesh, the Peoples Republic of Bangladesh, are known as the Bangladesh Armed Forces (Bengali pronunciation: baaNlaadesh-sstr baahinii; romanized as Bangladesh Sashastra Bahini). It is composed of three uniformed military forces: the Bangladesh Army and the Bangladesh Navy, as well as the Bangladesh Air Force. The Armed Forces fall under the control of the Ministry of Defence of the Government of Bangladesh and are directly managed by the Armed Forces Division of the Prime Ministers Office. As Commander-in-Chief, the Bangladesh Armed Forces is headed by the President of Bangladesh. It is home to the third largest defence budget in South Asia, and the third most powerful military force. During peacetime, Bangladesh Coast Guard and Bangladesh Border Guard (formerly Bangladesh Rifles), are under the Ministry of Home Affairs' jurisdiction. However, during wartime they are under the control of Bangladesh Army and Bangladesh Navy.

The Armed Forces Division (AFD), which formulates and executes military policy, is responsible for the Armed Forces Division (MoD). However, the Ministry of Defence (MoD), does not have any operational or policy control over the Armed Forces. The Prime Minister has led the AFD/MoD since independence. The Prime Minister and the President are advised by six members of an advisory board that consists of three chiefs of military services, the Principal Staff Officer of Armed Forces Division and military secretaries. When invited, the directors general of NSI, DGFI, and the BGB serve as advisory members. Armed Forces Day commemorates the founding and operation of three services of Armed Forces against the occupying Pakistan Army in the Bangladesh Liberation War. The country hosts official functions at Bangabhaban and the Armed Forces Division Headquarters in Dhaka Cantonment. All military cantonments are also included.
