It shares land borders with Montenegro to the northwest, Kosovo into the northeast, North Macedonia to the east, Greece to the south and maritime borders with Greece, Montenegro and Italy to the west. It possesses significant diversity together with the landscape ranging from the snow-capped mountains in the Albanian Alps as well as the Korab, Skanderbeg, Pindus and Ceraunian Mountains to the hot and sunny coasts of the Albanian Adriatic and Ionian Sea along the Mediterranean Sea. Historically, the nation has been inhabited by numerous civilisations like the Illyrians, Thracians, Ancient Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Venetians and Ottomans. The Albanians established the autonomous Principality of Arbër in the 12th century. The Kingdom of Albania and Principality of Albania formed between the 13th and 14th centuries. Before the Ottoman conquest of Albania in the 15th century, the Albanian resistance to Ottoman expansion into Europe headed by Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg won them acclaim over most of Europe. Between the 18th and 19th centuries, cultural developments, widely attributed to Albanians having accumulated both intellectual and spiritual strength, conclusively resulted in the Albanian Renaissance. Following the defeat of the Ottomans in the Balkan Wars, the modern nation state of Albania declared independence in 1912. In the 20th century, the Kingdom of Albania was invaded by Italy which formed Greater Albania before becoming a protectorate of Nazi Germany. Enver Hoxha formed Communist Albania following the Second World War and launched the Albanians on a course of oppression and decades of isolation. The Revolutions of 1991 concluded the fall of communism in Albania and eventually the establishment of the current Republic of Albania. Politically, the country is a unitary parliamentary constitutional republic and developing nation with an upper-middle income economy dominated by the service sector, followed by manufacturing. It went through a process of transition following the end of communism in 1990, from centralized planning to a market-based economy. Albania provides universal healthcare and free primary and secondary education to its citizens. The nation is a member of the United Nations, World Bank, UNESCO, NATO, WTO, COE, OSCE, and OIC. Jersey ( JUR-zee, French: [ʒɛʁzɛ] (listen); Jèrriais: Jèrri [dʒɛri]), officially the Bailiwick of Jersey (French: Bailliage de Jersey; Jèrriais: Bailliage dé Jèrri), is a British Crown dependency located close to the coast of Normandy, France. It is the second-closest to France of the Channel Islands, after Alderney. Jersey was a part of the Duchy of Normandy, whose dukes went on to become kings of England from 1066. The ducal title surrendered to France, and after Normandy was dropped by the kings of England in the 13th century, Jersey and the other Channel Islands remained attached to the crown. The bailiwick consists of the island of Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands, along with surrounding rocks and uninhabited islands named Les Dirouilles, Les Écréhous, Les Minquiers, Les Pierres de Lecq, and other lands. Although the bailiwicks of Jersey and Guernsey are often known jointly as the Channel Islands, the"Channel Islands" are not a constitutional or political unit. Jersey has a separate connection to the Crown from another Crown dependencies of Guernsey and the Isle of Man, though all are held by the monarch of the United Kingdom.Jersey is a self-governing parliamentary democracy under a constitutional monarchy, with its own financial, legal and judicial systems, and the power of self-determination. The Lieutenant Governor on the island would be the Queen's representative. Jersey isn't part of the uk, and has an international identity separate from that of the UK, but the UK is constitutionally responsible for Jersey's defence. The definition of United Kingdom in the British Nationality Act 1981 is interpreted as including the UK and the Islands together. The European Commission confirmed in a written reply to the European Parliament in 2003 that Jersey was within the Union as a European Territory for whose external relationships the UK accounts for Jersey wasn't fully part of the European Union but had a special relationship with it, especially being treated as within the European Community for the purposes of free trade in goods.British cultural influence on the island is evident in its use of English as the main language and the British pound as its primary currency, even though some people still speak or understand Jèrriais, the local form of the Norman language, and put names with French or Norman origins abound. Added cultural commonalities include driving access to the BBC and ITV areas, on the left, a college program after that of England, and the popularity of sports.
