Damaskus [daˈmaskʊs] (arabisch دمشق Dimaschq, DMG Dimašq), (türkisch/osmanisch Şam, auch Dimaşk) ist die Hauptstadt von Syrien und des Gouvernements Rif Dimaschq (Umgebung von Damaskus). Die Stadt hat offiziell 1.834.741 Einwohner, in der Agglomeration leben offiziell 2.831.738 Menschen (Stand jeweils 1. Januar 2010). Inoffizielle Schätzungen gehen oft von einer wesentlich höheren Einwohnerzahl aus. Die Hauptstadt bildet ein eigenständiges Gouvernement. Es wird von einem Gouverneur regiert, der vom Innenminister ernannt wird.

Damaskus ist eine der ältesten kontinuierlich bewohnten Städte der Welt sowie ein kulturelles und religiöses Zentrum des Orients. In Syrien selbst wird Damaskus häufig الشام / aš-Šām genannt; in der restlichen arabischen Welt wird dieser Name oft für das Land Syrien verwendet. Historisch steht er für die gesamte Levante. Vom seit 2011 herrschenden Bürgerkrieg in Syrien ist auch Damaskus betroffen. Die Angaben im Artikel beziehen sich im Wesentlichen auf die Zeit vor Ausbruch des Krieges.
