Mit 3,1 Millionen Einwohnern in der eigentlichen Stadt und 5 Millionen in der Agglomeration (Volkszählung 2011) ist sie Industriezentrum (Automobile, Leichtindustrie, Softwareentwicklung und Maschinenbau) sowie kultureller Mittelpunkt der Region mit Universität, Theater, Kinos und Museen.

Pune gilt als neuntgrößte Stadt Indiens; nach Mumbai ist sie die zweitgrößte Stadt in Maharashtra. Pune ist Hauptstadt des Distrikts Pune. Die Stadt bezeichnet sich selbst auch als „Oxford of the East“.
