Izmir, früher lateinisch als Smyrna bekannt (türkisch İzmir, griechisch Σμύρνη Smýrni, altgriech. Σμύρνα Smýrna), ist mit rund 4,3 Millionen Einwohnern die drittgrößte Stadt der Türkei und Hauptstadt der Provinz gleichen Namens. An der Ägäisküste am Golf von Izmir gelegen, beherbergt sie den nach Istanbul zweitgrößten Hafen des Landes.

Nach einer Gebietsreform ist Izmir eine Großstadtkommune (Büyükşehir belediyesi) und damit flächen- und einwohnermäßig identisch mit der Provinz. Erste Siedlungen auf dem Gebiet des heutigen Izmir datieren ca. 6500–4000 v. Chr. Das Gebiet wurde von Luwiern, Hethitern, Phrygern und Griechen erobert bzw. besiedelt.
